On September 26th, 2019, the Irish Research Council organised a training and network session, as part of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Cofund Collaborative Research Fellowships for a Responsive and Innovative Europe (CAROLINE), in Dublin.

This sort of training and network events are useful for the different MSCA CAROLINE fellows to meet and to share their research among each other.

The morning started with a presentation from Sarah Bowman about maximising impact through engaged research, where several stakeholder engagement strategies were shared. The presentation focused on how to provide enough information to the stakeholders so that they understand the evolution of a project that will bring benefits to the entire community.

The training day continued with 3 sessions of presentations from the current CAROLINE fellows, exploring a wide range of research topics from natural sciences to arts, heritage and humanities.

The presentations focused on:

  • risk management on developing countries focused on sustainability and climate change;

  • effects of climate change in mangroves;

  • collective memories of Irish cinema audiences in the 1950s-1960s';

  • exploring spatial mining and agriculture for sustainable development in Ghana;

  • understanding the impact of S. aureus in milk processing in Ireland;

  • comparison of peace processes between Ireland and Korea;

  • exploring the relationships between modern slavery and climate change in Peru and Bolivia;

  • squalene alternative using microalgae;

  • biomonitoring assessment of glyphosate exposures in Ireland;

  • promoting positive mental health and wellbeing among adults and children in Ireland;

  • perceptions about marine litter and microplastic pollution in Ireland;

  • evaluating flood mitigations in River Shannon catchment.

The training allowed researchers based in Ireland to understand the wider context of the CAROLINE programme and the research efforts to contribute to the different Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations.
