(2024) Policy brief - Plastic pollution and the plastisphere: findings and recommendations
Plastic pollution is an environmental concern due to the magnitude of mismanaged plastics reaching the environment and affecting it in different ways. Their physicochemical properties, including their light weight, resistance to corrosion and low degradation rates, allow plastics to travel great distances in the environment. Plastics undergo weathering, degradation, and fragmentation processes through exposure to ultraviolet radiation, abrasion, and interactions with biota. The JPI Oceans funded ‘MicroplastiX’ project explored the interaction between plastics, microorganisms, and the biofilm layer at the surface, which is a less studied scientific area. Moreover, the project also focussed on the organic and inorganic pollutants in this surface biofilm layer, commonly known as ‘plastisphere’.
This brief highlights the main project findings resulting from case-studies carried out in the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea. These aimed to assess the (1) environmental microplastic (MP) concentrations, (2) genetic diversity and accumulation of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and trace metals in the plastisphere and the (3) polymer type spectral changes from in situ experiments. The aim of this international collaborative and interdisciplinary project was to improve the understanding of how degradation mechanisms affect plastics in natural environments. The team included a network of scientists from diverse research fields (chemistry, biology, microbiology, physics and mathematical modelling), and countries (Sweden, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Ireland, and Brazil), working in synergy to address gaps on the pathways and fate of plastics in coastal and open ocean waters.
(2024) Navigating the Future VI - Placing the Ocean within the wider Earth system
Navigating the Future VI is a flagship foresight EMB Position Paper that explores the role of the Ocean in the wider Earth system and promotes collaboration between disciplines to tackle global issues. This document aims to influence and guide international, European and national research funding programmes, policy development and inspire the scientific community. This publication aligns with and provides input to important initiatives such as the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development and the EU Mission: Restore our Ocean and Waters, aiming to enhance awareness of the Ocean's critical role in addressing the climate, fresh water and biodiversity crises while supporting human health and wellbeing.
Navigating the Future VI is forward-looking publication highlighting the crucial role the Ocean plays in Earth’s interconnected systems—climate, biodiversity, fresh water, and human well-being—and delivers a bold vision for future marine research and policy.
Released at a crucial moment for global environmental action, Navigating the Future VI underscores the need for a transformative approach to managing Ocean resources. The Ocean is no longer seen as an isolated ecosystem; it is recognised as a key element in regulating climate, sustaining biodiversity, ensuring freshwater access, and supporting human livelihoods. Yet, the Ocean is also under immense pressure from climate change, pollution, and unsustainable exploitation.
Structured around four key themes—People, Climate, Fresh water, and Biodiversity—this Position Paper calls for more integrated, transdisciplinary research and governance approaches to safeguard the Ocean and its essential role in Earth’s systems. The recommendations made in Navigating the Future VI outline the marine research priorities needed to meet these challenges, from improved water resilience and climate adaptation strategies to biodiversity protection and understanding the dynamic relationship between the Ocean and people.
With contributions from leading marine scientists across Europe, the paper supports global initiatives such as the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development and the EU Mission: Restore Our Ocean and Waters. Navigating the Future VI reflects EMB’s ongoing commitment to bridging the gap between science and policy, ensuring that marine research directly informs decision-making for a sustainable Ocean future.
(2024) Bioaccumulation of trace metals in the plastisphere: Awareness of environmental risk from a European perspective
The term "Plastisphere" refers to the biofilm layer naturally formed by microorganisms attaching to plastic surfaces. This layer possesses the capability to adsorb persistent organic and inorganic pollutants, particularly trace metals, which are the focus of this research study. Immersion experiments were concurrently conducted in five locations spanning four European countries (France, Ireland, Spain, and Italy) utilising eight distinct polymers. These immersions, repeated every three months over a one-year period, aimed to evaluate the baseline bioaccumulation of 12 trace metals. The study underscores the intricate nature of metal bioaccumulation, influenced by both micro-scale factors (such as polymer composition) and macro-scale factors (including geographical site and seasonal variations). Villefranche Bay in France exhibited the lowest metals bioaccumulation, whereas Naples in Italy emerged as the site where bioaccumulation was often the highest for the considered metals. Environmental risk assessment was also conducted in the study.
The lightweight nature of certain plastics allows them to be transported across significant distances in the ocean. Consequently, evaluating trace metal concentrations in the plastisphere is imperative for assessing potential environmental repercussions that plastics, along with their associated biota, may exert even in locations distant from their point of emission.
